چکیده

We discuss in some detail the requirements on an early-Universe model that solves the horizon and flatness problems during the epoch of classical cosmology (t ≥ ti ≫ 10 sec). We show that a dynamical resolution of the horizon problem requires superluminal expansion (or very close to it) and that a truly satisfactory resolution of the flatness problem requires entropy production. This implies that a proposed class of adiabatic models in which the Planck mass varies by many orders of magnitude cannot fully resolve the flatness problem. Furthermore, we show that, subject to minimal assumptions, such models cannot solve the horizon problem either. Because superluminal expansion and entropy production are the two generic features of inflationary models, our results suggest that inflation, or something very similar, may be the only dynamical solution to the horizon and flatness problems.

The Mad Era: a Possible New Resolution to the Horizon, Flatness, and Monopole Problems

A cosmology with a dynamical Planck mass mpl is shown to solve the horizon and monopole problems (and possibly flatness) if there is an early MAD (modified aging) era where the universe becomes older than in the standard model as a result of a large mpl: the causality condition is mpl(Tc)/mpl(To) ∼ Tc/To (Tc is some high temperature while To = 2.74K.) Unlike inflation, there is no period of vac...

Inflationary Solutions in Quantum Cosmology

We prove that in the Hartle-Hawking approach to quantum cosmology the existence of an inflationary phase is a general property of minisuperspace models given by a closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe containing a massless scalar field with a λφ self-interaction. The evolution in time of the cosmic scale factor and of the scalar field in the very early universe is derived, together with th...

A Dynamical System Approach to Research in Second Language Acquisition

Epistemologically speaking, second language acquisition research (SLAR) might be reconsidered from a complex dynamical system view with interconnected aspects in the ecosystem of language acquisition. The present paper attempts to introduce the tenets of complex system theory and its application in SLAR. It has been suggested that the present dominant traditions in language acquisition research...

Well-posed Infinite Horizon Variational Problems

We give an effective sufficient condition for a variational problem with infinite horizon on a Riemannian manifold M to admit a smooth optimal synthesis, i. e. a smooth dynamical system on M whose positive semi-trajectories are solutions to the problem. To realize the synthesis we construct a well-projected to M invariant Lagrange submanifold of the extremals’ flow in the cotangent bundle T ∗M ...

A First Principles Warm Inflation Model that Solves the Cosmological Horizon/Flatness Problems

A quantum field theory warm inflation model is presented that solves the horizon/flatness problems. The model obtains, from the elementary dynamics of particle physics, cosmological scale factor trajectories that begin in a radiation dominated regime, enter an inflationary regime and then smoothly exit back into a radiation dominated regime, with nonnegligible radiation throughout the evolution...
